We
suffered through the Spanish Inquisition, the Salem Witch trials and
now we have "Family Values". Now lets face it, no one
wants to be accused of not having Family Values but what are they
really? I've heard the term bandied about but have never heard
anyone actually define what their idea of Family Values actually is.
Just like the enigmatic nature of terms such as Heretic and
Witch were used to destroy people's lives in the past, the term
"Family Values" is used to include some while excluding
others although I still haven't heard what even one of these
mysterious things are. Could it be that because of our ethnic
diversity, family Values differ from one group to another? Could it
be that it might not be possible to define a set of Family Values
all of us could agree on unless it is extremely general or should we
just let the conservative politicians and the so-called Christian
conservatives just make up our minds for us? It seems to me that
they are pushing for the job.
In closing I would say if you belong to a good church where you have
friends and an atmosphere that truly assists you in your growth as a
spiritual being as well as accepting you for who and what you are
than this is a wonderful thing.
Please know that there are those who like to throw the
"right" terms about and claim to be Christians but have
their own alternate agenda. These types like to tell you who to vote
for and who you should be against. They tend to subvert and confuse
good hearted people who only want to do the right thing. They use
them for their own purposes whether that be political power or just
to pad their pockets with your money while promising you things they
couldn't possibly deliver. The ultimate reality is your personal
relationship with the Lord. If you aren't sure about something, just
ask Him. He'll let you know.
